Memories of Mega Man 2: All Hail The Mighty Metal Bladeby Protoman Blues
A long time ago, back in 1988, a younger Protoman Blues was finishing his homework when he saw his older brother playing a strange game. The flashing lights and catchy music immediately captured his young mind. Taking the NES Advantage from his older brother, he played and played the game till he could no longer stay awake. This game, my friends, was Mega Man 2.
Okay, now that the nostalgia is out of the way, here is my review of Mega Man 2 for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Now, Mega Man 2 is quite simply one of the greatest video games ever made. It is my own personal favorite Mega Man games, for nostalgia reasons more than anything, but I will still keep this review non-bias to the best of my ability.
If you are into 2-D Side Scroller games, then you've come to the right place. Mega Man 2 is a sequel to the first Mega Man game. (The 2 kinda gives that away though). However, this sequel easily improves upon the first Mega Man game. Just like in the first game, Mega Man must still fight the Evil Forces of Dr. Albert Wily and his robotic minions. However, our robotic hero must now contend with 8 Robot Masters, instead of the 6 Robot Masters that the first game gave us. These 8 Robot Master are built by Dr. Wily himself, unlike the first game where Dr. Wily stole the 6 robots from Mega Man's creator, Dr. Thomas Light. The 8 Robot Masters that Dr. Wily created are AirMan, CrashMan, WoodMan, BubbleMan, HeatMan, FlashMan, QuickMan, and MetalMan.
The gameplay is pretty easy to grasp the first time around. You shoot. You jump. You shoot while jumping. You avoid getting hit. You NEVER touch spikes. Simple, isn't it? There is nothing difficult about the game play at all, especially if you've played other classic Mega Man games before, or even other 2-D Side Scrollers. The beauty of the Mega Man series is that when you defeat one of the Robot Master, you get equipped with there weapon. Quite frankly, that is what makes the Mega Man 2 one of the best Mega Man games around, that being the weapons you get from the Robot Masters in this game. The Metal Blade is possibly the best weapon you'll ever get in any Mega Man game, across the entire series. It shoots in 8 directions, it kills fast, and it doesn't run out of Weapon Energy that fast. Atomic Fire is a great weapon as well, plus Leaf Shield and Quick Boomerang as well. Each weapon you get is a weakness to another Robot Master as well. For example, Atomic Fire (HeatMan's weapon) does massive damage against FlashMan. So this can determine which stage you go to first or last. You also get 3 Items in the game essential to your quest. Item 1 is a Hovering Platform. Item 2 is a Rocket Slide. Item 3 is a Wall Crawling Platform.
Mega Man 2 was also the first Mega Man game to incorporate the Password system, a great asset to those Mega Man fans who simply cannot get past those annoying Horizontal Death Lazers on QuickMan's Stage with just 1 life. Unlike the first game, you could save your progress after you defeated each Robot Master. This is one of the aspects that make this game superior to the original Mega Man game. Also, this is the first Mega Man game to incorporate E-Tanks. Precious E-Tanks allow our hero to replenish all of his health. Is that Atomic Dog just not dropping the Health you need? Just have an E-Tank! These two new feature to the Mega Man series are what make this game a lot easier than the first Mega Man game. Especially when it comes the classic Dissapearing Blocks, and those oh so painful Spikes!
Another great aspect of the Mega Man series is the music. The majority of the Mega Man fans out there listen to the music as well. In the gaming community, the Classic Mega Man series has always been regarded as having some of the best video game music ever created. Especially Mega Man 2. Famous Video Game musicians like the Minibosses and the NESkimoes have samples tracks from Mega Man 2. As far as I know, almost everyone who's ever played Mega Man knows the FlashMan Stage theme as well as Wily's Castle Stage 1. My own personal favorite is AirMan's Stage Theme. In closing, this game holds a special place in my gaming heart, and it always will. This was the first Mega Man game I ever played, and the one that got me hooked on the Mega Man franchise long ago. Whether you play it on your old NES or on the Anniversary Collection, this game will not dissapoint in any way. To this day, it is still a challenging, fun, entertaining game to play. Mega Man 2 is a timeless classic and always keeps you coming back to Fight for Everlasting Peace!
