Memories of Mega Man 3: That Whistle....It Must Be Your Brother, ProtoMan
by Protoman Blues
Now, if you've read some of my other reviews, you'll know that Mega Man 2 is my personal favorite Mega Man game of all time. However, Mega Man 3 is quite possibly my second favorite of all time, and, in my opinion, definetely the best Mega Man game of the classic series. As Mega Man 2 was an improvement over the first Mega Man game, Mega Man 3 is an improvement over Mega Man 2.
As you know, the gameplay for the Classic Series is quite basic. You shoot. You jump. You shoot while jumping. You avoid spikes at all costs. You...Slide? Yes, that's right Mega Man fans. In Mega Man 3, our beloved hero gains the ability to slide. By simply pressing down on the D-Pad with the jump button, the Blue Bomber can slide for everlasting peace! It is a very helpful tool, and will continue to be in the rest of the Classic Series. As I said up above, this game adds on and improves upon the first 2 games. The slide is but one aspect of this. How else can they improve upon the series? Wait, I know! Lets add some new characters into the mix.
If man's best friend is indeed a dog, then a robotic man's best friend must be a robotic dog! Mega Man's creator, Dr. Light, decided that Mega Man needs some help to help him on his peacekeeping mission. His new companion, Rush, is his brand new robotic dog, with some helpful tricks to help our hero traverse through stages. Tired of the fact that Mega Man can't swim? Not to worry, our heroic dog Rush can transform into the Rush Marine, to help Mega Man travel through the watery depths of the levels. (Even though there aren't that many). Is that platform too high, and you don't feel like dealing with the dissappearing blocks? Here comes Rush with his useful Rush Coil, to spring Mega Man to heights he could not jump on his own. I've saved the best for last, of course. Probably the most useful transformation of Rush EVER, the Rush Jet. The Rush Jet allows Mega Man to fly on Rush, who can pretty much travel anywhere in the level he wants too, except underwater. (That's what Rush Marine is for) The Rush Jet in Mega Man 3 is the ONLY time in which you control where Rush moves too. Every other Mega Man game involving the Rush Jet only allows Rush to fly straight forward, so don't get use to that mobility. Now, onto the next new character, who just happens to be my favorite character in all of the Mega Man universe!
Dr. Light - "That Whistle.... It must be your brother, ProtoMan!"
ProtoMan, Blues in Japan, is my all time favorite character in all of Mega Man. He is the first Robot that Dr. Light created before Rock and Roll and the original 6 Robot Master from the first game. Simply put, he is the prototype! He mysteriously appears, with his famous Whistle, as BreakMan in order to challenge Mega Man. At first, you're not sure whether he is friend or foe. By the ending of the game, you should know!
Speaking of Robot Masters, our latest batch of 8 are MagnetMan, HardMan, TopMan, ShadowMan, SparkMan, SnakeMan, GeminiMan, and NeedleMan. But wait, that's not all! In Mega Man 3, the sinister Dr. Wily decides to create 8 robots, called Doc Robots, with the skills and weapons of the 8 Robot Masters from Mega Man 2. The Fiend! The Doc Robots appear after you defeat the first 8. ShadowMan, SparkMan, GeminiMan, and NeedleMan's stages are revisted, and slightly altered to make them harder, for the domain of the Doc Robots with 2 occupying each stage. I'll warn you now, that long, spike-filled drop on SparkMan's revisted stage is not all that easy!
As for the weapons you get from the Mega Man 3 Robot Masters, the same pattern applies where one Robot Masters's weapon is another one's weakness. Also, certain Robot Masters give you Rush's 3 abilities as well. The weapons themselves are not as good as the weapons from Mega Man 2, in my opinion, but they are still great weapons to use. For example, the Shadow Blade does go in 8 directions, same as the Metal Blade, but it does not have the same range, nor the immense power. Perhaps it was to make it more fair for the enemies. Still, we did get Top Spin!
On a quick musical side note, the Robot Masters stage themes are extremely good in this game, especially the Weapon Get Theme. It is easily the best Weapon Get theme in any Mega Man game ever, in my opinion. Once again, visit Atomic-Fire to get these wonderful themes! (I recommend the Weapon Get Theme, Wily's Castle Stage 1, SparkMan, and ShadowMan. My personal favorites)
For those of you who still have the original NES game, Mega Man 3 came with a fun little glitch. When you plug the second controller in, and press the D-pad to the right, you can super jump ridiculously high in the air. It made the game so much easier. It also made Rush Coil pretty useless. Also, if you fell into a pit and died, you could super jump out of the pit, and become seemingly invincible. However, it would get rid of the wonderful stage music, and that's unacceptable in the eyes of Protoman Blues!
Well, I think that about wraps it up for this review. Truly, a classic game, and one of the best Mega Man games ever made. One of the easier Mega Man games, but still a must for any Mega Man fan, as well as any fan of 2-D Side Scrolling games. Yet another timeless classic Mega Man game that keeps you coming back to Fight For Everlasting Peace!
Thank You For Playing!
